Juneau Ski Club Devo Team Program 2006-2007
Expectations of the Devo Team Athlete:
The athlete will come to the
hill:
- READY TO HAVE FUN
- READY TO LEARN
- READY TO SKI HARD AND FAST
To accomplish this the athlete will need to follow
these guidelines:
-
Helmets are required for
all of the Devo Team athletes during ALL training and
competition.
-
During the season the
athlete will use ONE pair of properly maintained skis.
Proper maintenance includes tuning and waxing every weekend. If there
are any questions on ski selection and maintenance please contact the
coach ASAP.
-
The athlete will come to
the hill dressed properly for the elements. As we all know, the
conditions at Eaglecrest are extremely varied and can change rapidly.
We will be training and competing in all conditions so it would be
prudent to pack extra clothing and equipment to be kept in your ski
bag/locker in the lodge.
-
Each morning, the athlete
(and parent) will check the dry-erase board outside of the JSC office
in the Eaglecrest Lodge. This board will contain meeting places and
times as well as training information for each day. Most days we will
be meeting at the top of the Hooter lift at 9:30 in the morning and
will train until 12:00 when we will break for lunch. Training will
recommence at 1:00 and will last until 3:30. This results in 5 hours
of training each day. When lift lines and rides have been factored in,
we will have approximately 3-4 hours of on-snow time each day.
Therefore it is extremely important that the athlete and parent read
the board each day, follow its instructions, and show up on time
for all training and competition. If there are any extenuating
circumstances that will result in the athlete missing any portion of
training on any given day, please contact the coach ASAP so that other
arrangements can be made.
-
It is expected that the
athlete will take at least one warm-up run before meeting the coaches
in the morning. The Hooter lift opens at 9:00 am, and, it is possible
to get two runs in on that lift before training starts if they are
done in a timely manner.
-
The athlete will follow all
Eaglecrest, Juneau Ski Club, and Devo Team rules at all times. It is
also expected that the athlete will know and follow the Skiers
Responsibility Code. (Text of the code can be found at http://www.juneau.lib.ak.us/eaglecrest/skicode.htm.)
In the unlikely event that a rules violation by an athlete occurs, the
parents will be contacted ASAP and a course of action will be
discussed.
Expectations of the Devo Team Parent(s):
-
The most important
expectation of athlete’s parents is that they help the athlete in
fulfilling all of their expectations. By helping them maintain their
equipment, anticipating and preparing for all weather conditions, and
ensuring that they are on time and ready to learn, the young athlete
will begin to develop good habits which will aid them throughout their
ski racing career.
-
There are 4 Youth Ski League
races at Eaglecrest that the Devo Team will be participating in this
year. Parents will be contacted before each event to enlist their help
in putting on these races. These races will not happen without the time
and effort of many volunteers. Participation as a race official, gate
keeper, and/or course worker in these races will give the parent
valuable experience in what it takes to put on a race. This experience
will come in handy as the young athlete progresses to the Junior Team
and the need for experienced race workers and parental volunteers is
increased. Of course all parents are encouraged to volunteer to help
with at least one (or more) USSA race over the course of the year.
Expectations of the Devo Team Coaches:
If the Devo Team athlete and
parents have to fulfill certain expectations, then it is only fair that
the coaches must be held accountable as well. The Devo Team Coaches
promise to do the following:
-
We will do everything in
our power to ensure that the Devo Team athlete will learn the
fundamentals of skiing and ski racing. We also hope to instill in the
young athlete a love of the sport that will stay with them over the
course of many years.
-
At least one of the coaches
will be available in the JSC office in the Eaglecrest Lodge from 8:00
to 8:45 am every morning that the Devo Team is training. This will
allow parents and athletes to contact us with any questions or
comments regarding training or equipment.
-
The coaches will maintain
and make available racer profiles for each member of the Devo Team.
-
At any time, the coaches
will encourage that the parents come on the hill to observe and even
participate in the Devo Team training as long as it does not interfere
with the progress of the Devo Team athletes.
